In New Orleans for work and had dinner on bo urbon street last night (the most most amazing turducken gumbo) and came to the conclusion that yes...bourbon street is terrible. touristy, dirty, and filled with drunken college kids, and its not even weekend. On an unrelated note:

someone think s having a Toyota Corolla (LE!) is marvelous...somehow.

(having some minor things done to the cruiser while Im out of town)

That’s my opinion of New Orleans in general. My wife drags me down there a couple of times every year and I’d just rather skip it.

On the positive side, because my daughter has been to New Orleans a couple of times every year, she wasn’t all that impressed with New York. She said New York was just as dirty as New Orleans and while there were more of them, the buildings weren’t that impressive.

Yeah, Bourbon Street sucks. Take a streetcar down St. Charles into the Garden District. As I recall, the Tulane/Loyola bar and restaurant scene is much better and less touristy. I haven’t been there in a long time, though. I seem to recall the French Quarter being mostly a captive audience trap. Partly because of Katrina and the rebuilding, but partly because that’s how the world works now. Why run 3 hole-in-the wall mom&pop places when you could have a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co in the same spot?! /s

It is fun if you are an alcohol enthusiast, because cheap, open- carry and to-go drinks .

anything becomes fun when you are an alcohol enthusiast at mardi gras levels though, right?

Bourbon Street is a check mark.  Its cool to say you’ve been there.  The rest of the time, its best to move a couple blocks to either side of it.  Canal Street is fun and down towards the water on Front Street is cool too.  There’s a lot more to the french quarter than Bourbon. If you’re into history, there’s a lot to be learned from taking a guided tour of the area.

You're going to want to eat at K Paul's. Top 5 places I've ever eaten at. Getting twin steak medallions, also magazine street and Stein's deli(in the back they sell cantillion and other rare beers just ask).

New Orleans food scene was great. Oceana Grill treated me to the best redfish with crawfish etouffee. Rest of Bourbon Street should be called Rancid Beer Street, because that is what it smells like.

If you want to get shitfaced and walk around and keep drinking, and you are so drunk that you can ignore the smells and another few thousand drunk assholes, it is fine.

I’ve been on Bourbon during Mardi Gras... I also hate large crowds. It wasn’t great. But I’ve also been there on Thanksgiving weekend when practically no one is there. Much better. It’s a very cool city that I regret not visiting more when I only lived 4 hours away.

Royal street was better but yeah... I'm not a crowds person at all.

Yep... Everyone’s all like “WOO! BOOBS! ALCOHOL!” and I’m all like “This architecture is so cool, I wish there weren’t so many drunken idio- aaa nd I just stepped in vomit...”

When I went for Thanksgiving I got to stay in a family friend’s creole townhouse on Royal street and the French Quarter was as abandoned as it gets. It was so heavenly and relaxing compared to the Mardi Gras experience. It was the best way to do New Orleans.
